When this novel was published anonymously in 1814, it created great interest among readers who sought to discover the author. Scott claimed that he published the book this way in order to avoid 'political discussion'. Because the book was published only 60 years after the invasion of Prince Charlie and because the dark and bloody days of 1745 still rankled in the minds of many living people. This book is a historical romance and is the first book in what is known as the Waverly Novels. There were eventually 48 novels in the series including 'Ivanhoe'. Nevertheless, this decision led to a series of brilliant essays on The English Humourists of the Eighteenth century, The writers of this period had always been Thackeray's favorite reading. Those would be his own actions, and the actions of his dramatised self. Only the opening of this novel ever got written, and this is its first publication in book form. It is a unique fragment, fantastic in comedy, and rich with the poet's personality. Regarding the novel Thomas said "My novel blazes on.
