Here is a beautiful copy of a scarce James Ellroy novel. Published in 1988 this copy looks like it was published yesterday with just two exceptions. There is a very small area of discoloration to the front board. Actually it is just a little lighter in tone than the rest of the cover. There is also the tiniest bit of shelf-wear to the bottom of the spine panel on the dustjacket. It is virtually invisible. The novel takes place in 1950's Los Angeles and deals with the "Red Scare" and a string of brutal mutilation killings. We have Hollywood leftists on a collision course with a grand jury inves... At the time that this book was written, Abe Fortas was an associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1968 when this book was published it was unprecedented. It came at a time when the nation was shocked by the findings of the 'Riot Commission Report', the death of Martin Luther King, and the flare-up of violence across the country. Fortas believes that America has a constructive alternative to violence. He explains what this option is as he carefully defines both the limit and the scope of permissable dissent and civil disobedience. He describes the crucial, creative role that these non-violen... It is Inscribed by her father, the Baron Von Falz-Fein, on the dedication page. No dustjacket is present. Contains beautiful illustrations. The Bookman Portfolio of 1928 contained four laid-in prints (suitable for framing). Three are in full color that illustrate scenes from John Galsworthy's 'The Forsyte Saga', and one marvelous photographic portrait in black and white of John Galsworthy. The photograph was executed by Raphael. This copy is in at least very good condition. Maurice Girodias has been alternately described as the 'old king of porn' and the 'Lenin of the sexual revolution'. In truth he has been one of the most important behind-the-scenes figures in the history of modern literature. Girodias was the founder of the Olympia Press, the Paris publishing house to which so many talented twentieth-century writers gravitated when their works were considered too scandalous for everyone else. Anyone who knows the Olympia Press understands its importance in 20th century literature. This book is a first edition and first printing. It was Girodias who through muc... View More...
