Isaac Bashevis Singer migrated from Poland to America in 1935. A great writer by any standards he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. The Nobel commitee cited his "impassioned narrative art which, with roots in a Polish-Jewish cultural tradition, brings universal human conditions to life".
