Dombey and Son is one of the great classics of Charles Dickens and it is my personal favorite. It appeared after Martin Chuzzlewit and was an effort by Dickens to regain popularity he had lost with the publication of his previous novel. The novel is also a landmark in Dickens' work in that he placed the story at a higher social level than his previous novels. The story involves the downfall of a dignified and pompous merchant and his learning of the power of love as opposed to the lesser power of money. This is a beautiful set from the Limited Editions Club. Both volumes are in very good condition but for some slight fading to the spines. The slipcase shows moderate wear and there is a tear at the top panel along with some shelf-wear. The slipcase in general is somewhat sunned and worn but It still protects the books very well. There were only 1500 copies of this edition printed in 1957 of which this is number 1498. The illustrations were drawn by Henry C. Pitz who signed the book on the colophon. The color plates were reproduced by George C. Miller. The endpapers are illustrated with the same pattern used for the slipcase. A wonderful and very compelling novel. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible.
