This is a beautiful set of four volumes. The set is in Fine condition and almost new. This is the First Edition and the second printing. The only thing that I must mention is that each volume has the tiniest shelf-wear to the extreme top of the dustcover on the spine. It is virtually invisible and probably will become completely invisible when I place the books in an archival Brodart dust jacket protector before shipment. The set is magnificent. The Lives of the Painters is an important and fascinating history of Western painting and its artists written by the renowned historian and critic of the fine arts, John Canaday. In his incisive and engaging style, Canaday unfolds the history by means of biographical and critical essays on more than 450 individual painters. The four volumes cover the development of painting from the close of the Middle Ages in Italy down through Cezanne and his revolution in painting. There are 176 full color Plates, 350 monochrome illustrations and 1,456 pages in the four volumes. The fourth volume is completely plates and illustrations on fine gloss paper and they are absolutely beautiful. Again, the books are in virtually new condition and have clearly never been used. All dustjackets are present and this is a set that can entertain, educate, and be enjoyed by generations.
