The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews, and of His Friend Mr. Abraham Adams is the full title of this work. The novel has often been called the first realistic novel of English Literature. Henry Fielding (author of Tom Jones) turned aside from the episodic sentimental writing of his age to give an honest picture of the manners and customs of his time and to satirize the foibles and vanities of human nature. This novel is in the form of a comic epic and the time of the plot is the early eighteenth century in England. This copy is in near fine condition and it is bound in half-leather over marbled boards. The binding was done by the World famous Zaehnsdorf Bindery and that alone would make the book collectible. The endpapers are marbled. This is the first edition of the George Cruikshank illustrated edition. The novel itself was first published in 1742. The Zaehnsdorf binding on this volume is in great condition and it is tight and fine. The textblock is without foxing and that is unusual for this edition. There are a few pages after page 100 that have minor creases to them . The top edge of the book is coated in gilt and the second blank page of the preliminaries has a bookplate attached. This book is from Thomas Roscoe's Novelists Library and it is a collectible volume. The volume makes a fine presentation with its beautifully decorated spine and boards. The spine has six compartments and fancy gilt printers devices as well as the date of publication (1832). A very nice offering. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
