This is a great offering for Stephen Crane fans as well as anyone that is engaged in bibliographic studies regarding this Great classic novel of the civil war. There are two quarto volumes here with a matching and labelled slipcase. The dimensions of the books are 11 1/4 tall by 7 3/4 wide. This is a Limited edition of 1000 copies of which this is number 762. Both volumes are in Very Fine condition and show no flaws. The slipcase is in Near Fine condition with a bit of wear to the spine label and a bit of a stain to the front slipcase label. The stain appears to have come from the red dye of the cloth that makes up the slipcase. All-in-all, this is a Very attractive set and it makes a great presentation. The first volume of the set is written by the world famous master of bibliography, Fredson Bowers. Mr Bowers literaraly wrote the textbook of bibliography that is the current authoritative manual:" Principles of Bibliographic Description". This first volume is entitled "Introduction and Apparatus". This first volume is a serious bibliographical study of the novel and the development of the manuscript. It includes a frontispiece color portrait of Stephen Crane. The second volume is the facsimile of the final draft of the manuscript in Stephen Crane's own handwriting. It shows his false starts and his changes. All of his "crossouts" and notes are present. It is truly a remarkable thing to see the development of this manuscript. These books can be used for study or for pleasure. You can actually read The Red Baadge of Courage exactly as Crane intended it to be. A beautiful set and a treasure of knowledge. We are pleased too send pictures on request.
