This book is still in the original publishers shrinkwrap. This very important novel was originally published in 1989 and it became an international bestseller. It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1990 and that was the first time that the Prize had been given to a hispanic author. The novel chronicles the story of Cesar, an older musician. Now, towards the end of his life he is living in a cheap hotel, getting drunk, and listening to the recordings made by him and his band. His mind contains his entire past annd we are shown a true and believable picture of pre-Castro Cuba and the life that people led in that time before 1959. The book is a fascinating and informative read. This beautiful book is bound in full-tooled burgundy with satin moiré endpapers, satin ribbon bookmark and 22kt gold on the spine. The spine has raised bands in the style of classic bookbinding. Beautiful gilt designs ornament the front as well as the back boards. The paper was made especially for this edition. The leather was cut entirely by hand. It includes a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive card laid in with biographical information as well as a few words about the book itself. Published by Easton Press it is a volume of heirloom quality and will be treasured for generations to come.
