This volume is a beautiful facsimile of a medical book that was originally published in 1858. It is a special Limited Numbered edition. The book is in Very Fine condition in full-leather with gilt decoration and lettering. All edges are gilt and the endpapers are finely marbled. In the inner front pastedown there is a special plate that I imagine was placed there by the publisher that says 'This is copy 947 of a Limited edition of 7,500 copies in the Library of Dr..........' (I am leaving out the Doctor's name). The Doctor's name was clearly printed when the book was sent to him because there is no handwriting on the label. The design is stamped in 22k gold, There is a brown silk ribbon bookmark bound-in to the volume and the book is indexed. This would be a great book for anyone interested in the development of science as it regards surgical history such as an interested layperson, a medical student of any kind, or a Doctor interested in the history of his Art. The book is profusely illustrated. The textblock, which is pristine, contains the original text of this medical classic. J. Marion Sims was the founder of modern gynecologic surgery in the United States. He conceived his operating techniques when, as a young man practicing in Alabama, he undertook to treat slave girls suffering from vesicovaginal fistula. Sims invented new instruments to meet new requirements and covered the whole range of gynecological surgery in the pre and post antiseptic era. This book contains two of his classic works. 'Silver Sutures in Surgery' and 'Clinical Notes on Uterine Surgery'. The book comes with a 14 page pamphlet that introduces the subjects to modern readers. This is a very fine offering and it makes a great presentation. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
