The more familiar title for this novel is "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". For this edition the original French title was used. These two volumes are one of the earliest publications of the Limited Editions Club. They are both large quartos in wraps. They still have the original very fragile glassine wrappers on each volume although there is about a half inch of the glassine wrapper missing at the extreme top of the spine on volume one and a tiny bit at the top of the spine and a very little on the rear wrap lower left corner of Volume two. Most of these glassine wrappers on LEC's have long since dissappeared. The books are in outstanding condition and the textblocks are pristine. I have had a custom built slipcase to contain and protect these fine books. It is made of brown bookcloth and is brand new. This is Victor Hugo's Classic work translated by Andrew Lang. The books were set up and printed by R. Coulouma, Master Printer in Argenteuil. There are wood-cut illustrations executed by Frans Masereel. Masereel has signed the books on the colophon at the rear of volume two. There were 1500 copies of this work published in 1930 (the Limited Editions Club began in 1929). This is number 618. The books are printed on thick Velin D'arches paper and they are really impressive. Victor Hugo, leader of the French romantic movement, not only could tell a gripping story but could endow his characters with a realism so powerful that they have become monumental literary figures. This work has every quality of a great novel. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
