Edmund Spenser was an English poet best known for his "The Faerie Queen" a long allegorical poem published in 1609. His first important publication was "The Shepheardes Calender" Published in 1579. Both of these works remain of great interest and retain their lofty postition in literature. This offering is a fove volume set of his complete poetical works. The set is in near-fine condition with minor shelfwear to the tops and bottoms of the spine..There is no foxing in the set and the text is clean and fine. The bindings are in finely decorated book cloth on both the front and back boards with gold highlights. There is no date on the books but I would estimate publication around the last half of the 1800's at the very beginning of the art deco movement in publishing. In the advertisement at the front of the first volume it says that "painstaking accuracy was employed to render it the most correct text extant. This leaves little to be done in the way of corrections or emendations by any future editor". The books are housed in a beautiful custom made bookcloth slipcase to hold the set and there are silk ribbons to make it easier to slide the books out with no damage. Each volume is also in its own mylar wrapper to afford further protection. The slipcase is green to match the color of the bindings and is not shown in the photograph because I wanted you to see the books themselves. The set makes a lovely presentation. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
