George Eliot (real name Marion Evans) is also the author of such classics as Silas Marner, Middlemarch, Felix Holt:The Radical, and The Mill on the Floss. She was an astounding writer and her lyricism pervades all of her novels as well as this drama in poetic form. The Spanish Gypsy is a classic tale that is here related in a full length drama. This volume is bound in half-leather over marbled boards by the world famous Zaehnsdorf bindery. The leather is an interesting shade of green and there is some sunning to the top of the volume both to the front and the back boards. More noticeable on the back the sunning extends for just under an inch from the top extreme. The spine, which is beautifully decorated in gilt with decorative printer's devices added has faded to a nice tan color and it has faded rather uniformly. The raised bands on the spine are also very densely gilt. The endpapers are marbled and there is a illustrative bookplate on the front pastedown. The textblock is pristine and there is no foxing present. Published by William Blackwood and Sons in london in 1868, this is a really excellent copy of this lesser known work by Eliot. Any Zaehnsdorf binding is a special thing in and of itself and apart from the fading, this binding is in outstanding condition. A true classic and a fine collector's book. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
