This little book contains three letters written by the author of Doctor Zhivago. It is a small book of 25 pages and it was published as a New Year greeting in 1967. The book is in near-fine condition. The blindstamped front board is pristine white as is the rear board. There is a slight crease to the ffep but the text-block is completely clean and fine. The first letter deals with a topic that was at the time foremost in Pasternak's mind: The mass trials and indiscriminate executions of 1936-1937 claimed the lives of two of Boris Pasternak's closest friends, the Georgian poets Titian Tabidze and Paolo Yasvili. Upon learning of Tabidze's arrest and rumored execution, Yasvili fearing a similar fate, killed himself. The letter is one of the most moving that Pasternak wrote and it is written to Yashvili's widow. The second letter is written to Chikovani, a well known Georgian poet, and his wife. it talks about problems of translation and techniques. Near the conclusion of the letter, Pasternak mentions his novel; The work that was, in fact, Doctor Zhivago. The third letter was written to G.G. Margvelashvili after Boris Pasternak was awarded and had to refuse the Nobel Prize. Pasternak sought rest and refuge in Georgia for three weeks, and then had to return home, where his persecution because of the publication of Doctor Zhivago continued up to his death in 1960. This book is protected by a glassine wrapper and that it how it was originally published. A necessity for the Pasternak collector. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
