When this book was published in 1963 Darrell Royal was the head football coach at the University of Texas. Here, peppered with humorous anecdotes from a famous coaching career, is a multi-dimensional view of college football that you can't see as a spectator. Darrell Royal shows you what goes into these superbly conditioned and highly skilled teams that provide thrills for legions of fans on Saturday afternoon. The book gives a close-up view of the pre-game phase of football. We go into the conference room where the coaching staff plans strategy, studying the game films, analyzing the opponent's offense and defense. The reader is given a comprehensive view from the locker room to the playing field. Before, during, and after the game. The book contains many photos as well as diagrams of strategy. This book is in outstanding condition with all corners square and with clean boards but for a few very light marks to the back cover. The volume is inscribed by Blackie Sherrod who was the legendary executive sports editor of the Dallas Times Herald and co-author of the book. The inscription reads 'David, The things a man won't do for groceries - such as good bourbon' it is then signed 'Blackie'.
