Here we have what is perhaps the Greatest Novel written in the Twentieth Century and certainly one of the Rarest volumes sought by collectors. Ulysses is a work of towering genius and of inestimable importance. This is the 1922 Egoist Press edition. It is usually considered the second printing of the first edition published by Shakespeare and Company earlier in the same year. This is the First English edition and it was printed in Dijon using the original plates. When the Shakespeare and Co. First edition was exhausted in a few months, the Egoist Press purchased the original printing plates from Sylvia Beach, the initial publisher. Printed in Dijon, France by the printers who had created the plates it was rather curious in that the title page reads 'Published by the Egoist Press, London, by John Rodker, Paris.' The Egoist Press edition was a private edition as was the original 1922 Shakespeare and Co. edition. This edition was limited to 2000 copies on handmade paper and 500 of those copies were confiscated by New York Postal authorities on the grounds of obscenity. This volume is numbered 1566. This is a very rare book and may be as close as any of us will come to the first edition of this most important novel because of the incredible price that the first printing sells for these days. This copy has been beautifully rebound by The Dancing Cat Bindery in Dallas in Full highest quality rich blue leather. The lettering and lining on the spine are in 22k gold. Fine French Binding techniques have been utilized and the Inside hinges are also full leather. The end-papers are hand-marbled and the silk end bands have been hand-sewn. The quarto sized book is housed in a beautiful full leather clamshell case that matches the binding of the book. The case is also internally decorated with the same hand painted papers as were used for the endpapers. This is a magnificent and absolutely unique presentation. The book is in very nice condition with some very light toning to the textblock as would be expected in a book of this age. There is no writing inside and there are no bookplates or other detractions from the book. This book was rescued from a fairly desperate state and the errata are not present in this copy. One of the original blank preliminary pages is somewhat ragged at its outside extreme with a very small piece of paper from the lower right corner missing. The half-title page is in about the same condition with a very small bit of paper missing to the top and bottom corner extremities. On page 493 there is significant creasing to the lower right with some loss of paper but not affecting the text. Having said that, this is a fine presentation of a beautiful volume. This is the Complete and unabridged text of this Masterpiece. It's difficult to know just what to say about Ulysses because of its importance and its extreme rarity. However, if you have read this far, you know exactly what you are looking at here. A Very, Very Rare piece of Literary history. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
