This is a very nice copy of the First edition and First issue of Melville's Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War. This is BAL 13673 with the monogram blindstamped on the center of the front and rear boards. On the Copyright page, the word "Hundred" is Misspelled "Hnndred" as called for in the first edition and the double-flyleaves are present. The end-papers have been replaced sometime in the past and there is one front flyleaf that isa bit ragged at the outer edge. The book is bound in a beautiful custom-made clamshell case executed by The Dancing Cat Bindery in Dallas, Texas. The case is of the highest quality leather. It is green in color to match the binding of the book and the spine of the case is lettered in 22K gold. The presentation is really nice. The text-block shows some toning because of the age of the book but there is no foxing. The front board is somewhat rippled while the backboard is smooth and flat. There have been repairs to the extreme top and bottom of the spine where there had been significant deterioration of the cloth. The spine is now stable. The gilt lettering on the spine is somewhat faded but it is still readable. Battle-Pieces is a collection of seventy-two poems with a prose supplement in the rear. Early in 1866, Melville came to believe that the poems that he had been writing about the Civil War would make a saleable collection. This book introduced the public to Melville as a working poet. The collection opens with a stand-alone poem entitled "The Portent" about the martyrdom of the abolitionist John Brown. The opening poem is followed by fifty-two "Battle-Pieces" and a prose supplement. Melville dedicates his work to "The memory of the Three hundred thousand who in the war for the maintenance of the Union fell devotedly under the flag of their fathers". There are poems on all aspects and many personalities of the Civil War. This is a wonderful book in a fine presentation. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
