The Piazza Tales was the only collection of Herman Melville's short fiction published during his lifetime. The book was never reprinted during his lifetime and thus it is a rarity of classic American literature. In December 1855, Melville proposed that a volume that would contain his short fiction contributions to "Putnam's Magazine" be published. It would contain "Bartleby the Scrivener", "Benito Cereno", "The Lightning-Rod Man", "The Encantadas" and "The Bell Tower". He thought that the book might be titled "Benito Cereno and other Sketches". His publisher agreed and when Melville wrote a new story called "The Piazza" as an introductory piece, the collection was published in 1856 as The Piazza Tales. This is BAL 13669 with all points correct for the first issue. There are seven pages of advertisements in the rear of the volume and the "14*" signature is present. The book is rebound in black leather with gilt titles on the spine over red leather. The edges are gilt although the gilt shows some wear. There is a ribbon bookmark bound-in. I have had the endpapers replaced in a beautiful marbled design. The textblock is very clean with no foxing and there are very faint, almost invisible impressions to several places on the leather of the front and back boards. The book resides in a custom leather slipcase which is lined with red bookpaper to match the labels on the book. This is a rare and important piece of American Literature in a Very nice presentation. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
