Author Name Stowe, Harriet Beecher Title Men of Our Times Binding Cloth Book Condition Very Good Jacket Condition No Jacket Edition First Edition Publisher New York Hartford Publishing Company 1868 Seller ID 002835 Harriet Beecher Stowe, who also wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, was a major force in American Literature in the mid-nineteenth century. Her books were immensely popular and the number of copies sold of her works was unprecedented in American Publishing. This is the First edition of this title and it was sold by subcription only. This copy is in at least Very Good condition. There were two states of the title page. In the first state "Douglas" was misspelled. In the second state of the tile page, it was corrected to "Douglass". This volume has the corrected title page. The rest of the book is first state. In this work Harriet Beecher Stowe profiles the great men of her time and the book has eighteen wonderful plates inserted that have tissue guards. Written right after the assasination of Abraham Lincoln, she uses the first 110 pages of the book to detail his life and the assasination. It's interesting to read the reaction of a contemporary. Abraham Lincoln referred to Stowe as "The little woman who started this big war". He was referring to Uncle Tom's Cabin at the time. This is BAL 19449 bound in green cloth. I have had my bookbinder create a custom slipcase for the book in green cloth to match the binding of the book. The opening of the case is trimmed in high-quality leather. This is a lovely presentation. The gentlemen that are covered in the book are as follows: Lincoln, Grant, Garrison, Sumner, Chase, Wilson, Greeley, Farragut, Andrew, Colfax, Stanton, Douglass, Buckingham, Sherman, Sheridan, Howard, and Phillips and Beecher. All are contemporary Stateman, Generals or Orators. A fascinating look at the great men of the nineteenth century by a contemporary author. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
