This is a beautiful classic published by The Limited Editions Club. The book is near fine with a tiny corner chip to the two tops (left and right) of the spine. You really have to look for them. The slipcase is also Very Good with just a touch of soiling from handling and some yellowing from age. There is some fading to the spine. All-in-all I would rate this book at very good to near fine. The title of this book, a sequel to Melville's Typee, was borrowed from the native dialect of the Marquesas Islands. The word signifies a person who wanders, like Melville, from island to island. Melville wished to relate his adventures in the Society Islands and to make people realize the effects promiscuous social intercourse with white men, generally, and missionaries, particularly, had had upon the Polynesians. His point was that the natives were better off before these people came. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible.
