Click to view full description | 1. | Eliot, George Felix Holt: The Radical London William Blackwood and Sons 1866 First Edition Half-Leather Very Good+ No Jacket 8vo George Eliot was one of our finest 19th century novelists. She was also responsible for Silas Marner as well as The Mill on the Floss. The is a gorgeous three volume set of the First edition of Felix Holt: The Radical. The volumes are in half-leather over marbled boards and the endpapers are marbled as well. The spines are finely and intricately decorated in gilt and all of the edges are marbled. The textblocks are absolutely clean with no foxing and the book is printed on woven paper. There is a very small bit of soiling to the half-title and the verso of the ffep in volume two but it does not detract at all. The books are individually paginated. The leather presentation case was built by my binder and is of the highest quality leather. Each volume resides in its own mylar wrapper within the slipcase. This is a stunning set. The novel's plot revolves around a political election in a rural area of England at the time of the reform bill of 1832. This novel provides a vivid picture of the society of the times. The writing, as with all of George Eliot's major works,is exquisite. All classes of society are included in a thorough portrait of English rural life. Ther novel hinges on character and the characters are very skillfully presented. It also contains such Dickensian devices as an unknown ancestry and a strange will. The romantic hero and heroine spiritually transcend the limitations of the sympathetically depicted but earthbound characters around them. This is an important work of nineteenth century literature and a wonderful novel as well. We are pleased to send pictures on request. Price: 775.00 USD | See Full Description |
 | 2. | Eliot, George Silas Marner London William Blackwood and Sons 1861 First Edition Half-Leather Very Good+ No Jacket 8vo George Eliot was the pen-name for Mary Ann Evans who was also frequently known as Marion Evans to her friends. She was also the author of ''The Mill on the Floss'', ''Felix Holt'', ''Daniel Deronda'',and a number of other wonderful novels. Her writing is exquisite and Silas Marner is one of the great classics in the history of Western literature. This copy is finely bound in half-leather over marbled boards. There is some darkening of the leather to the extremities of the book but it is not nearly as noticeable as the pictures make it look. The endpapers are also marbled and the spine is absolutely gorgeous. The spine is ornately decorated in gilt and the gilt and lettering is still bright and beautiful. The red leather label on the spine is recent and it is lettered in 24k gold. The book had no label when I acquired it. The author label on the spine is original. All edges are marbled and there is no foxing in the book. There is a small label attached to one of the blank preliminary pages with two names on it and the date 1892. It could probably be removed if the new owner wanted to do that. The volume is housed within its own mylar wrapper within a custom made full leather slipcase that is constructed of the highest quality leather. The inside of the slipcase is also marbled. This is a really beautiful presentation of a towering classic of literature. George Eliot's intent in writing Silas Marner was to show that good things come to pure, natural people. In contrast to the deadly serious nature of the hero are the simple and humorous village characters. Silas is a symbol of patience, pathos, and goodness. He is the victim of an injustice which he does nothing to rectify. He waits for sixteen years until justice (the abstraction) conquers and he reaps his deserved harvest.
