Aiken's British Poets with Biographical and critical Prefaces, Aiken
1 Aiken Aiken's British Poets with Biographical and critical Prefaces
Philadelphia, PA Thomas Wardle 1831 Reprint Full-Leather Good No Jacket 8vo
Here is a wonderful and extensive selection of the works of virtually all of the Great British Poets. The book contains over 800 pages and shows considerable wear since it was published in 1831, The first edition was published in 1820 so this is a very early printing. Each section on a particular poet is prefaced by a short biography of the man about to be read. Suffice it to say that this is a great book that has worn over time. Published in 1831 this volume is bound in full calf that is marred or scratched on both boards and the spine. Marbled endpapers are present with a small bookseller sticker in the top corner of the front pastedown. In parts of the book there is heavy foxing, in other parts the text is virtually clean. All edges of the book are marbled but very faded. This book is in good only condition only but it is solidly bound. It is not falling apart by a long stretch. It makes a marvelous volume to peruse at random or to research a particular poet. It's still a great book but it is not as pretty as we would sometimes like!

Comrades: Brothers,Fathers,Heroes,Sons,Pals, Ambrose, Stephan E.
2 Ambrose, Stephan E. Comrades: Brothers,Fathers,Heroes,Sons,Pals
New York Simon & Schuster 1999 First Edition Proof Wraps Near Fine No Jacket 8vo
This proof is in new condition with all corners square , no creases to the spine, and a pristine textblock. Proofs are pre-first edition and as such are printed in very small quantities. They are given only to the author, the publisher, and book reviewers. Consequently the uncorrected proof is more rare than the First edition. Stephen Ambrose was a well known, if controversial, historian. He wrote 'Undaunted Courage' about the Lewis and Clark expedition as well as 'Citizen Soldiers' and 'D-Day' and 'Band of Brothers'. His writing style is fluid and expressive. This book appears to be a series of essays on the friendships which men try with difficulty to establish. Here you will find such figures as Eisenhower, Crazy Horse and Custer, Nixon, Patton etc. He talks of combat friends as well as brothers such as the Ambrose Boys, the Eisenhower Boys, and the Custer Boys. All-in-all this is a marvelous book on the friendships that males create as they go through their lives, An unusual and gripping read.

Lives of the Painters - 4 Volumes, Canaday, John
3 Canaday, John Lives of the Painters - 4 Volumes
New York Norton 1969 1st/2nd Printing Hard Cover Fine Fine 8vo
This is a beautiful set of four volumes. The set is in Fine condition and almost new. This is the First Edition and the second printing. The only thing that I must mention is that each volume has the tiniest shelf-wear to the extreme top of the dustcover on the spine. It is virtually invisible and probably will become completely invisible when I place the books in an archival Brodart dust jacket protector before shipment. The set is magnificent. The Lives of the Painters is an important and fascinating history of Western painting and its artists written by the renowned historian and critic of the fine arts, John Canaday. In his incisive and engaging style, Canaday unfolds the history by means of biographical and critical essays on more than 450 individual painters. The four volumes cover the development of painting from the close of the Middle Ages in Italy down through Cezanne and his revolution in painting. There are 176 full color Plates, 350 monochrome illustrations and 1,456 pages in the four volumes. The fourth volume is completely plates and illustrations on fine gloss paper and they are absolutely beautiful. Again, the books are in virtually new condition and have clearly never been used. All dustjackets are present and this is a set that can entertain, educate, and be enjoyed by generations. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Living History, Clinton, Hillary
4 Clinton, Hillary Living History
New York Simon & Schuster 2003 First Edition Hard Cover As New Fine 8vo
This volume is a virtually new first edition of 'Living History'. The book itself is in fine condition with all corners square. The dustjacket is also in fine condition and it is not price-clipped. Few beyond Hillary Clinton's friends and family have ever heard her account of her amazing journey. In this book she writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in middle-class America in the 1950's and her transformation from 'Goldwater Girl' to student activist and to controversial First Lady. It is also a chronicle of her life with Bill Clinton, a thirty year adventure in love and politics that has survived many problems. An interesting story to say the least. Beautiful copy.

5 Crane, Stephen Red Badge of Courage - Manuscript Facsimile
Washington D.C. NCR Microcard editions 1973 First Edition Limited/Numbered Slip-Case - Hard Cover Fine No Jacket 4to
This is a great offering for Stephen Crane fans as well as anyone that is engaged in bibliographic studies regarding this Great classic novel of the civil war. There are two quarto volumes here with a matching and labelled slipcase. The dimensions of the books are 11 1/4 tall by 7 3/4 wide. This is a Limited edition of 1000 copies of which this is number 762. Both volumes are in Very Fine condition and show no flaws. The slipcase is in Near Fine condition with a bit of wear to the spine label and a bit of a stain to the front slipcase label. The stain appears to have come from the red dye of the cloth that makes up the slipcase. All-in-all, this is a Very attractive set and it makes a great presentation. The first volume of the set is written by the world famous master of bibliography, Fredson Bowers. Mr Bowers literaraly wrote the textbook of bibliography that is the current authoritative manual:" Principles of Bibliographic Description". This first volume is entitled "Introduction and Apparatus". This first volume is a serious bibliographical study of the novel and the development of the manuscript. It includes a frontispiece color portrait of Stephen Crane. The second volume is the facsimile of the final draft of the manuscript in Stephen Crane's own handwriting. It shows his false starts and his changes. All of his "crossouts" and notes are present. It is truly a remarkable thing to see the development of this manuscript. These books can be used for study or for pleasure. You can actually read The Red Baadge of Courage exactly as Crane intended it to be. A beautiful set and a treasure of knowledge. 6 Eggleston, George Cary American War Ballads and Lyrics- 2 Vols
New York Putnam 1889 First Edition Decorative Cloth Very Good+ No Jacket 16mo
This is a most interesting two volume set. It was published in 1889 and contains lyrics from all the way back to the revolutionary war. Later the two volumes were combined into one. This is the original format. This is the First edition and the two volumes are bound in a highly decorated cloth with gilt decorations both on part of the boards and on the spines. Hawthorne, Fields, James T.
7 Fields, James T. Hawthorne
Boston James R. Osgood 1876 Reprint Decorative Cloth Very Good+ No Jacket 16mo
This little book is very interesting for those interested in Nathaniel Hawthorne and his life and works. It was written by James Fields who In 1839 joined William Ticknor and became junior partner in the publishing and bookselling firm known after 1846 as Ticknor and Fields, the publishers of most of Hawthorne's novels, After 1868 the publisher was known as Fields, Osgood & Company also a major publisher of Hawthorne. With this company, Fields was the publisher of leading contemporary American writers, with whom he was on terms of close personal friendship. Hawthone was one of these friends. It is fascinating to read a book about an author like Hawthorne written by a friend of his. Hawthorne is still something of a puzzle when it comes to personal relationships and this little 16mo book opens doors to that puzzle. Originally published in 1871 this book is dated 1876. A very unusual offering from a friend of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Part of the 'Vest Pocket series'. The book is in very good+ condition and it shows a bit of chipping to the extreme top of the spine. Both the front and back endpapers are advertisements. The textblock is clean with no foxing. The volume is 128 pages long. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Spontaneous Mind - Selected Interviews, Ginsberg, Allen
8 Ginsberg, Allen Spontaneous Mind - Selected Interviews
New York Harper Collins 2001 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 8vo
The Interviews collected in 'Spontaneous Mind' are indeed interviews of art and creativity. The book is in very near fine condition. It is in black boards with all corners square and no soiling or staining to the boards. At the extreme top of the spine there is a slight turning in towards the textblock but it is geometrically even and all material is present and not scratched. It is extremely minor. The dustjacket is also very near fine and if you look closely at the top of the spine panel there is a slight creasing that is virtually invisible and it does not seem to represent normal shelf-wear. There is no shelf-wear to the bottom of the spine panel. The front and back panels of the dustjacket are fine and unsoiled and the jacket is not price-clipped. The silver lettering on the spine of the book itself is bright and unfaded. The book is in beautiful shape. These interviews are chronologically arranged and in some cases previously unpublished. They were conducted throughout Allen Ginsberg's long career. Always an engaging and candid subject, Ginsberg considered the interview to be an Art form. It was also an opportunity to get his message across to many people, which as a student of Eastern Religions, he believed was his spiritual obligation. In these interviews, dating from the late 1950's to the mid-1990's Ginsberg speaks frankly about his life, his work, and the events of the time. A great modern poet, Ginsberg's poems will be important in the history of the Art form. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Frog Prince, The: An Autobiography, Girodias, Maurice
9 Girodias, Maurice Frog Prince, The: An Autobiography
New York Crown Publishers, Inc. 1980 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good 8vo
Maurice Girodias has been alternately described as the 'old king of porn' and the 'Lenin of the sexual revolution'. In truth he has been one of the most important behind-the-scenes figures in the history of modern literature. Girodias was the founder of the Olympia Press, the Paris publishing house to which so many talented twentieth-century writers gravitated when their works were considered too scandalous for everyone else. Anyone who knows the Olympia Press understands its importance in 20th century literature. This book is a first edition and first printing. It was Girodias who through much turmoil brought English readers, for the first time, such authors as William Burroughs, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, J.P. Donleavy, Terry Southern, Vladimir Nabokov and many others. I would rate this book as being in Very Good+ condition with some shelfwear present and a touch of soiling. The book itself has a bright silver spine that goes around the boards as if it were quarter bound in silver. I've never seen anything quite like it. The dustjacket is primarily black so it tends to show fingerprints and the like. There is light shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine panel and a small closed tear at the bottom and top of the front panel. They will be hard to see when I place the book in an archival dustjacket protector. The dustjacket is not price-clipped. All said, this is an attractive copy of a most interesting book and the presentation looks better than it sounds,

Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife, Hawthorne, Julian
11 Hawthorne, Julian Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife
New York D. Appleton and Co. 1885 First Edition Later Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ No Jacket 8vo
Julian Hawthorne was the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne and also a writer. He authored 'Bressant' and a number of other fiction and non-fiction works. I believe this to be the second printing of this two volume biography. It is dated 1885 on the title page and 1884 on the copyright page. The books are in at least very good condition. The books have very lightly bumped corners except for the rear board of volume two. There is slight toning to the text but it is quite light and there is no foxing. The spines show some shelf-wear at the tops and the bottoms. There are some very small chips to the labels which are written and decorated in gilt. There is a previous owner's name on the ffep of volume one. It is written lightly and it is quite old. There is also the same name written on the first blank page of volume two. Each volume is in its own mylar wrapper. All-in-all this is a very respectable set. It is fascinating to read Julian's perspective of his father as he was growing up. The biography has a mixed reputation. Parts of the work are inaccurate, sensational, and perhaps even falsified. However, without this book much information about Nathaniel Hawthorne would have been lost. This is a similar situation to the Sir Walter Scott biography written by his son-in-law John Lockhart. The biography is very important but not without large errors. Nevertheless this wonderful two volume set is an important and interesting read.

Century, The, Jennings and Brewster
12 Jennings and Brewster Century, The
New York Doubleday 1998 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine 4to
This is a Fine quarto size book that could be used as a coffee-table book. The book itself is in near fine condition with just a touch of shelfwear which is virtually invisible but for a small area of wear on the back board. There is a very small crease to the first free page (FFEP) to the right top corner. The page is black so the small crease is very hard to see, This is a true first edition and first printing. The dustjacket is also near fine and shows slight shelfwear to the top of the spine panel and the rear inside flap has a tiny turned corner at the top. The dustjacket is not price-clipped. This is really a beautiful book and most of the things I have mentioned you will not notice at all. What was it like to watch the Wright Brothers soar into the sky? To hear the first crackling voice aired on the radio? To cower in the ghastly trenches of Europe during World War I. The stock market crash of 1929, the birth of rock and roll, the fall of the Berlin wall. All of these events and countless more are covered in this very heavily illustrated book. Hundreds of pictures and a fine full text to accompany them. This is a spectacular book. It presents history as it was lived and as it will be remembered. A keepsake volume for the whole family.

White Jacket - Northwestern- Newberry, Melville, Herman
16 Melville, Herman White Jacket - Northwestern- Newberry
Chicago, IL Northwestern-Newberry 1970 1st/2nd Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo
This Hard cover copy of 'White Jacket' is published by Northwestern University Press and is considered to be the authoritive edition of this great novel by Herman Melville. The book contains much bibliographic information regarding the first edition of White Jacket. There is a 96 page editiorial appendix at the rear of the volume. This book is for people who really want specific information on the books that they read. It also contains the full text of White Jacket. There are a couple of library stamps scattered through the book and one on the top-edge. The rear free endpaper is missing, probably torn out by someone trying to disguise the ex-lib nature of the book. The front and rear flaps are attached to the book itself. Having said all that, the book is in excellent condition. The textblock is clean and there is very little soiling to the dustjacket. These Northwestern-Newberry editions of Melville are all considered the best reference possible to his books. I am selling this one because I have an extra copy. This is very much a reference book and that's why I decided to sell it even though it is ex-lib. Apart from the library additions this volume looks brand new and will serve any Herman Melville reader or researcher very well.

Going to Iran, Millett, Kate
17 Millett, Kate Going to Iran
New York Coward-McCann 1981 First Edition Proof Wraps Near Fine No Jacket 8vo
Kate Millett was one of the founders of the Women's Movement and one of the most important writers on the subject. This book is a pre- First Edition uncorrected proof in very near fine condition. There is some very slight fading to the spine but the book is perfectly square and has not been read. There were few copies of this Proof published. After the Shah's downfall, Iran saw a period of chaos and power struggle. The committee for artistic and intellectual Freedom sent out an urgent plea to feminists to come and see conditions in Iran. Kate Millet answered the call. I personally lived in Iran during the period just before her journeys. This book is a highly personal account of her experiences in a country where a person can get seventy-five lashes for taking a drink, where Millett and her lover were defamed and threatened with death, and where she made lasting friendships. The volume is a wonderful read and a great collector's book for those interested in other cultures and/or feminism. A very nice Uncorrected Proof.

An Antarctic Diary, Passel, Charles
18 Passel, Charles An Antarctic Diary
Abilene Tx Four-O Publishing 1992 1st Thus Quarter-Leather As New No Jacket 8vo Signed by Author
This is a magnificent and extremely rare volume. Geologist Charles F. Passel served on the famous 1939-1941 Antarctic expedition under the command of Admiral Byrd. These are his diaries from that expedition and this offering was published in 1992. Previous editions of the diary had been edited and expurgated. In this edition Mr. Passel insisted on the diary being published exactly as it was written, with misspellings and other anomalies intact. The author said that he wanted these pages exactly as he wrote them with his frozen fingers in the Antarctic. No editing was to be done. This copy is one of only forty copies published that were signed by the author. It is presented in the publisher's beautiful clamshell presentation box and the book is quarter-bound in pigskin over marbled boards. This volume is flawless. The binding and the case remind one of the chilly Antarctic landscape and in fact the binder actually read the book to draw inspiration for her design. The reading is wonderful.I was at a Bookshow some time ago and was lucky enough to speak with the publisher regarding the book. I bought all of his available copies as I had sold the two copies that I had previously owned. This is the last copy. For those of you who are fascinated with Antarctic exploration, it doesn't get much better than this and there are truly very few copies available. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Faith and the Future, Ratzinger, Joseph
19 Ratzinger, Joseph Faith and the Future
Chicago, IL Franciscan Herald Press 1971 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ 8vo
This book was written in 1971 by Joseph Ratzinger, the man who was the Pope (Benedict XVI), It has the Vatican Imprimatur on the back of the title page. It states that the book is free of moral or doctrinal error. The book is in fine condition and bound in an attractive brown cloth. All corners are square and there is no soiling. The dustjacket has a couple of very minor flaws. There is a tiny chip to the outside extreme top front panel and just a touch of shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine. It is hardly noticeable. The back panel has one very small closed tear at the bottom and one at the top. It shows a touch of toning. The book looks really good despite of these minor issues. The dustjacket is not price-clipped. The book is primarily a theological essay and it is 112 pages long. To own a book by a fairly recent head of the church that was written long before he became Pope is an insight into how this man thinks and what his beliefs truly are, A remarkable and unusual volume. A Great copy. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Melville, a Biography, Robertson-Lorant, Laurie
20 Robertson-Lorant, Laurie Melville, a Biography
New York Potter 1996 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Fine 8vo Signed by Author
Herman Melville's towering achievement stands as a timeless monument to the richness and diversity of nineteenth-century American Literature. He employed a particularly American idiom in his writing and his immortal masterpiece, Moby Dick, broke the boundaries of the novel as it was then known and understood. This is a powerful and very accessible biography of this fascinating man and his works. The book is in Fine condition with only some very, very faint soiling to the fore-edge. The dustjacket is fine and it is not price-clipped. The inscription that is written on the half-title page is to William Freehling, the great Civil War Historian. It thanks him for helping the author "sort out" the Civil War period. This is a most interesting read as well as an interesting association copy for those who love history and literature.
