The book is a full quarto in size and is in fine condition. The dustjacket, which is not price-clipped, shows just a tiny bit of shelfwear. Here we have color as well as black and white photos that qualify as artwork. Each photographer has his own little section of the book and it is very interesting to see the difference in approach of these masters of the art. Most photos are full or half page. The transitions were gradual and exact dates for the Middle Ages can be misleading. It is generally agreed that the Medieval world emerged from the declining Western Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries and continued into the period of the Renaissance. They were once called the 'Dark Ages' but the Middle Ages are no longer considered so dim and the 'Dark Ages' is now generally considered to be the time before 1000 AD. The unifying force of the Middle Ages was Christendom. With the collapse of Rome, Christianity became the standard bearer of Western Civilization. This beautiful and Fine set of Five volumes covers the Middle Ages from the standpoint of the most knowledgeable writers of their respective periods. The books are all in Fine condition and they have never been read. They have gorgeous decorative cloth covers and spines and cover the entire period under discussion. The slipcase is also finely decorated. The books are very readable and can be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in this period of history. The five books come in a decorative presentation case. There is a bump to the top left rear of the case and the bottom left rear and there is some wear to the top rear of the case, The case still looks good and is doing its job by protecting these lovely books.These do not really detract as they are virtually never seen when using the books. The five books are: Volume 1: The Birth of the Middle ages 395-814 AD by H. st L.B. Moss, Volume 2: The Making of the Middle Ages by R,W, Southern. Volume 3: The Crucible of the Middle Ages, the Ninth and Tenth Centuries by Geoffrey Barraclough. Volume 4: The High Middle Ages 1150-1309 AD by John H. Mundy, Volume 5: The Waning of the Middle Ages by J. Huizinga. All of the volumes have color plates and are wonderful for reading as well as reference. They make a wonderful presentation and look great on the shelf. The books have notes on the volume, individual index's, Bibliographical Notes and Introductions.
