Tennyson, Alfred Lord Tiresias and Other Poems London Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc 1885 First Edition Cloth Very Good+ No Jacket This is a lovely First edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson's 'Tiresias and Other Poems'. The volume is in very good+ condition. The boards are clean and fine and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There are 26 poems in this book including 'Tiresias'. There is very slight shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine. No material is missing, just a tiny bit of curling from sitting on a shelf. There is a closed tear at the top of the ffep of about a half inch and there is offsetting on the ffep as well. There is also offsetting on the rear endpaper and just an outline of whatever was laying in there to the back pastedown. The hinges were repaired at some time in the past. This offsetting comes from some previous owner laying some material in the front and back of the book. The book is not ex-lib. 'Tiresias', in Greek Mythology was a Theban seer and his predictions played an important part in the lives of Oedipus and his descendants. Blindeed in his youth for seeing Athene bathing, he received second sight as his consolation. He was transformed for a time into a woman as a result of seeing snakes coupling. This guy should have been more careful regarding what he looked at. This is a very nice book and has only very light toning from age. There is no foxing or soiling and the original binding is quite beautiful in a simple elegant way. A wonderful First edition of Tennyson with something for everyone.
