Stall What a Young Man Ought to Know and What a young Wife ought to know Philadelphia, PA Vir Publishing Company 1897 First Edition Cloth Very Good+ No Jacket These two little books are fascinating for their extrapolation of social and sexual attitudes at the end of the Victorian era. Both books are 12mo in size and in excellent condition. They reside in protective Mylar covers. What a Young Wife Ought to Know is a First edition and probably second printing. It is bound in blindstamped maroon cloth and is in Very Good condition but for a few pen marks in the book that do not interfere with the text, primarily in the table of contents. Although the book is ostensibly authored by an "Emma Drake", the copyright notice is by Sylvanus Stall, the author of the other volume in this offering. Perhaps he used a pen name so that the book would appeal more to women. The books contents detail the attitudes and now archaic rules of behavior and thought for a young wife at the turn of the century. There are chapters on Health, The choice of a husband, what a young wife should expect to be to her husband, Marital relations, "antenatal infanticide" (abortion), the moral responsibility of parents in heredity, guarding against secret vice and many other subjects that now seem very quaint and somewhat odd. There is a small black ink mark on the ffep. What a Young Man Ought to Know is also bound in a matching maroon cloth that is blindstamped on the front board. It is a First edition and First printing. There is a slight separation at the front pastedown where the webbing shows through a little but the book is solid and in no danger of separating. It follows the same Victorian standards, as does the "Young Wife" book. The 'Young Wife' book is a second printing and is dated 1901 and 1902. There are a number of pages in the front of the book with black and white photographs of "Eminent Men" and quotes from them recommending the book. The men certainly appear to be "eminent" but I have never heard of any of them. The books contents include such subjects as Personal Purity, Physical weakness, Evils to be shunned and consequences to be dreaded (three chapters), the reproductive organs - their purpose and their prostitution, Who should not marry, selecting a wife and many others. I think that you get the idea! These books are of real interest in terms of social history and they are really fun to look through or read. They are quite unusual and can be wonderful material for conversation and discussion. They are also pretty funny! We are pleased to send pictures on request. Price:
