1 Rabelais Gargantua and Pantagruel - 5 Volumes
Portland Maine Limited editions club 1936 1st Thus Slip-Case - Hard Cover Fine No Jacket . Signed by Illustrator
Limited editions club books are always collectible in their own right but there are a number of them that are special. This set is such a work. All five volumes are in very fine condition and illustrated throughout. There were 1500 copies of this monumental work printed and in the rear of volume five, on the colophon, is the signature of the books designer. This is copy 1434 of 1500. The original paper labels are present to the spines and they are in fine shape. When the books are stood up in their correct order the paper labels present a full illustration to the reader. These books are really Fine. I have had a really nice slipcase custom designed for these books. It is a cloth case and it's color complements the color of the books' individual bindings. This is a marvelous presentation of this most important classical writing. The book's story is about an amiable dynasty of giants. The characters are prodigious eaters and drinkers, happy and earthly. The five books which contain a galaxy of types are loosely held together by the main characters. Discursive and monumental Gargantua and Pantagruel is an astounding achievement. The words "Gargantuan" and "Rabelaisian" used as adjectives came from this work. But Rabelais has a serious purpose. He demonstrates his theme heriocally. That theme is that the real meaning of life is to expand the soul by knowing all the souces of experience. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
