1 Melville, Thoreau, others Putnam's Magazine Vols. 1 & 2
New York G.P. Putnam 1853 First Edition Half-Leather Very Good No Jacket
Some of the most significant literature of the nineteenth century was first published in these very important volumes from 1853. Volume one contains the first appearance in print of three installments of Henry David Thoreau's "An Excursion to Canada" which was later published in book form as "A Yankee in Canada". It was six months later that the extraordinary "Walden" was published. Also in Volume one is a long critical essay Entitled Our Young Authors: Herman Melville. It is a brilliant commentary on the literature of the nineteenth century. Volume two has a very rare first appearance of an important Melville story and represents much of the value of the set. I am speaking of "Bartleby the Scrivener" which is present here in two installments. This lengthy story was not to be published again until three years later when it was published in book form as part of "The Piazza Tales". The volumes, which are quarto is size, are bound in beautiful half-leather with gilt lettering and ornamentation on the spines as well as the boards. There are two names and dates on the ffep of each volume. The name in both cases is "Barker" and one is dated 1853, presumably the first owner of the set, and the other is dated 1907. These books were obviously handed down as heirlooms in the "Barker" family. The books are contained in a custom made full-leather slipcase and they each have mylar wrappers to further protect them within the case. Corners are square on both volumes and the endpapers are marbled as are the edges. Bindings are tight and there is some foxing within the two volumes but for the most part the texts are clean. This set makes a lovely presentation and it is very rare to find both volumes together and in a fine presentation such as this. This is Nineteenth century literature for the connoiseur. We are happy to send pictures on request.
