1 Rowlandson, Mary Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
Boston Houghton Mifflin Company 1930 First Edition Limited Decorative Cloth Near Fine Very Good-
This is a most interesting little 86-page book. Originally published in 1682 it at once commanded attention in Old as well as New England. It is reprinted here in a Limited edition of 1500 copies. The book is in Near Fine condition with an absolutely clean textblock and no writing or bookplate within. The front board is beautifully illustrated and although the scan of it seems to show significant wear on the front wraparound part of the spine material, when you are holding the book this wear is invisible. The binding is tight and the corners are square. The dustjacket is another matter. It is quite rare to find this book with a dustjacket and this one shows missing paper to the front panel as well as the back panel. There is also missing paper at the top and bottom of the spine. The spine paper is connected to the rear panel but not to the front panel. Nevertheless, the dustjacket is held together well by the Brodart book protector. The front board says that this is the story of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson "Who was taken prisoner by the Indians with several others and treated in the most barbarous and cruel manner by those vile savages". The preface to the edition of 1903 says "No book of its period in America can boast equal evidence of enduring public favor". This book is an invaluable contribution to early New England history and anyone who is interested in life in the American Colonies will enjoy its authentic and graphic contemporary delineation of the manners and customs of the Native Americans of the time as well as of the American Colonists. This is a wonderful and very unique volume. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
