1 LeSage Gil Blas, The Adventures of
London Hurst Robinson and Co. 1822 1st Thus Full-Leather Very Good+ No Jacket
These four volumes are bound in full green calfskin with gilt decoration on all boards as well as the spine. The endpapers are marbled and all edges are marbled as well. There are only a few spots of foxing in the four volumes and the textblock is clean and unmarred. The books are presented in a green leather slipcase that matches the bindings of the books and the slipcase is internally trimmed with high-quality red leather to emulate the marbling on the endpapers and edges. The books are 12mo. There are fine inserted illustrative plates throughout the books and the books make a remarkable presentation. The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane is a long novel made up of many episodes. It was one of the first works of literature to introduce thieves, vagabonds, and vulgar peasantry into fiction. It is a precursor of the realism of Flaubert and Balzac. The setting is supposedly Spain but the characters and settings are in reality French. The timeless appeal of the book comes from the skilled narration of exciting tales, and from its author'sshrewd insight into the minds of his picturesque characters. A remarkable and rare 1822 First Thus edition of a timeless literary classic. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
