1 Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth In The Harbor
Boston Houghton Mifflin Company 1882 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine No Jacket
This is the last book published by Longfellow and it contains the unfinished poem “The Children's Crusade". This is the second issue of the First edition. The book contains original poetry as well as five translated poems. This is BAL 12239. The point of issue at the bottom of page 27 has been corrected and is a cancel (replacement). There were three issues of the book and the second issue is identified by the correction as well as the replacement of page twenty seven. This was done because when the error was discovered the books were already in their bindings. The third issue was corrected by replacing conjugate sheets. The volume is in brown cloth that is decorated and lettered in gilt. The top edge is also gilt. There is a frontispiece portrait plate of Longfellow and the original tissue guard is still in place. The book contains 88 pages and the textblock is completely clean with no foxing with the exception of a tiny bit of foxing to the title page and a bit of offsetting from the frontispiece. The volume is 16mo (almost 12mo) at 4 1/2" wide by 6 3/4" tall. There is slight shelf-wear to the extreme top and bottom of the spine but the boards are in excellent condition. This book also contains a poem to President Garfield who was friends with both Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Truly, a very nice copy of the last work of a Master American poet. Near fine in brown cloth with gilt on the cover and the spine. Light shelfwear particularly to the spine extremeties. A lovely copy of BAL 12239. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

2 Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth New England Tragedies, The
Boston Ticknor and Fields 1868 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine No Jacket
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was one of our greatest American poets. His other works include 'The Song of Hiawatha' , 'Evangeline', and 'The Courtship of Miles Standish'. This book is a First Edition and First printing. It is BAL 12150. The book is near fine and the boards are clean and decorated in gilt. This copy contains the 'TF' device at the bottom of the spine and the pendants in the device are more or less solid. BAL says that this is one of the first copies printed. It is a very early copy of a fine First edition. There is some shelfwear to the extreme top and bottom of the spine but it is quite light and all of the cloth is present. The outer corners of the book show a really small spot of wear and it is almost not worth mentioning. The book still has it's original brown endpapers and the front free endpaper (ffep) has a crease and a bit of scratching. The endpapers are in excellent condition for a book from 1868. Viewed from that perspective they seem almost new. The gilt on the front board is very bright and there is only a very small bit of fading to the gilt on the spine. The textblock is very clean with just a touch of toning and no foxing whatsoever. This is truly a very nice copy of this important book. 'The New England Tragedies' is a long dramatic poem composed of two dramas, each with a prologue and five acts. The first is titled 'John Endicott' and the second is called 'Giles Corey of the Salem Farms'. This is wonderful reading and what can I say about a first edition Longfellow? A great addition to the shelves of any collector. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow stands as a giant among American poets. He is the author of 'The Song of Hiawatha' , 'Paul Revere's Ride', and 'Evangeline' among other fine and classic works. He was also the first American to translate 'Dante's Inferno'. He is a legend for his lyric poems that are known for their musicality. This first edition volume of 'Three Books of Song' is in near fine condition. The boards are clean and unsoiled. There is minor shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine but it really does not detract. The original endpapers are present and the textblock is pristine with no trace of foxing. The three titles that are included in this volume are 'Tales of a Wayside Inn- The Second day', 'Judas Maccabeus', and 'A Handful of Translations'. The binding is tight and sound and there is only a slight fading to the gilt lettering on the spine. The top-edge is gilt and the gilt is in excellent condition. This is an impressive and very collectible book for readers of Great American Literature. This is BAL 12159 and the superfluous signature mark '12' on page 165 is present as called for by BAL.
