1 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Septemius Felton or the Elixir of Life
Boston James R. Osgood 1872 First Edition Decorative Cloth Near Fine No Jacket
Here is an outstanding copy of the First edition and Second printing of 'Septimius Felton, or The Elixir of Life There were only 3000 copies of this title printed on June 24,1872 which included this printing and the first printing. There are no records to show when the type was corrected during the printing, so we presume that the book with the correction is the second printing and was printed on the same day. The only difference between the first printing and the second is that on page 42, line 18 there is the word "it" in the second printing. In the first printing which I also have available, there is only a "t" in the same place. The book is in very near fine condition with a touch of shelfwear to the top and bottom of the spine and the tiniest of wear to the outside corners (it is almost invisible). It is a beautiful binding. Hawthorne had left this book incomplete, in two drafts, at his death. Una, Hawthorne's daughter, and the poet and friend of Hawthorne's, Robert Browning, prepared the first draft for the 1872 publication. The novel is considered to be a "fragmentary" novel and is part of The Elixer of Life manuscripts which were first published in complete form in 1977. In this book Hawthorne explores themes of immortality and it is a wonderful story. It is something of a ghost story that was based on an experience that he had when living at "The Wayside" an incredible house that I have personally visited. The gold lettering on the spine is bright and beautiful. The blindstamp on the boards is fine, as is the gold and shows no evidence of rubbing. The textblock is extremely clean with no foxing. The endpapers are original. This is Clarke A29.2 and the primary Point of Issue for the second printing is that on page 42 line 18 the word "it" is present. This is a really great copy of a work from an American Literary Master. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

2 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Septemius Felton or the Elixir of Life
Boston James Osgood 1872 First Edition Cloth Near Fine No Jacket
Here is an outstanding copy of the First edition and First printing of Septimius Felton. There were only 3000 copies of this book printed on June 24,1872. This volume is in near fine condition with very minor shelfwear to the extreme top and bottom of the spine. The gold lettering on the spine is bright and beautiful. The blindstamped bands at the top and bottom of the binding and wrapping around the spine are clear and show very little fading. The textblock is extremely clean with no foxing. There is a little raggedness to the outer edge of the title page and the preface page. The very last page of the text shows a little missing paper to the outer edge but it does not interfere with the text. I have not seen another copy of this book in as well-preserved a state as this. This is Clarke A29.a and the primary Point of Issue for the first printing is that on page 42 line 18 the word "it" is missing the "i" and only a "t" is present. I believe that the endpapers have been replaced in this copy at some time in the past. This is a Really great copy of a work from an American Literary Master. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

3 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Snow Image and other Twice Told Tales, The
Boston Ticknor and Fields 1852 First Edition Very Good+ No Jacket
Here is a Wonderful copy of a true antiquarian classic. This is the First Edition and First issue published by Ticknor, Reed and Fields in 1851. Although the title page says 1852 this First edition was intended for simultaneous publication with the First British edition and both are believed to have been printed in December of 1851. This is BAL (7607) and Clark (A19.1a). There were 2,425 copies of this book printed on December 11, 1851. This copy is in Very nice condition with light rubbing to the boards and extremities and some minor shelf-wear to the extreme top and bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering on the spine is still quite bright. There is a four page publishers catalog inserted at the front of the book and it is dated July 1852. The textblock is very clean with a touch of soiling here and there but nothing that is really serious. The binding is quite tight and the book has been well preserved although when you open the book to certain places the binding thread is visible in the gutter. These are not loose pages. This volume is presented in a custom-made presentation case that consists of a brown bookcloth to match the book and the opening of the case is reinforced and made more attractive by a fine leather perimeter. This item makes a very nice presentation. We are pleased to send pictures on request.

4 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Twice-Told Tales - Limited Editions Club
New York Limited editions club 1966 1st Thus Slip-Case - Hard Cover Near Fine No Jacket . Signed by Illustrator
Near Fine edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic. The book is near fine with a few light spots to the red top coating of the book. This is hard to see and does not really detract. There is some wear to slipcase and a very small tear of the paper at the top right corner of the opening. There is light sunning to the spine. There were only 1500 copies of this edition printed in 1966 of which this is number 1149. It was printed at the Stinehour Press. The illustrations were drawn by Valenti Angelo and the volume is signed by him on the colophon. A great classic in a very lovely format. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible.

5 Hawthorne, Nathaniel Wonder Book
London Henry Bohn 1852 First Edition Decorative Cloth Very Good+ No Jacket
Here is the Beautiful First English edition of The Wonder Book. The First American edition was published by Ticknor, Reed and Fields on November 15th, 1851 and this First English edition was published by Henry G. Bohn on December 22nd, 1851, less than a month later. So although the title page reads 1852 this is actually an 1851 printing. This copy is in the special "Gift" binding with fine blindstamping to the red boards and a wonderful gilt decoration to the front board. The gilt decoration and lettering on the spine is somewhat faded but it can be easily read. There have been very minor repairs to this copy at the extreme top and bottom of the spine where it had become frayed. The volume has the original pale yellow endpapers and the textblock is clean with no foxing. There are a couple of spots of foxing to some of the plates but it is really virtually non-existent. This is one of Nathaniel Hawthorne's most beloved works and it is still enjoyed by children of all ages. The stories are based on mythology and each one has a lesson to teach. An important and rare piece of American Literary History. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
