Galsworthy, John A Modern Comedy - With ALS London William Heineman 1929 First Edition Limited/Numbered Full-Leather Near Fine No Jacket Signed by Author A Modern Comedy is part of The Forsyte Saga (1886-1926) in which Galsworthy pictures the life of a large, middle-class family against a carefully detailed background of English life. It is a true classic and has stood the test of time. Apart from its important literary value, this novel (which is solid and very readable) is important as a social document of the various currents of British life in the 1920's. The volume is composed of three long sections - The White Monkey, The Silver Spoon, and Swan Song. These were originally published as separate novels. This remarkable copy, which was published by William Heineman LTD was limited to 1030 copies of which this is #221. The book is bound in vellum and there is some slight wear and aging to the vellum boards. There is a bookplate present which was kindly placed on the inside of the back cover so as to be non-obtrusive. The top-edge is fully gilt and the gilt is in great shape. The volume is signed on the limitation page by John Galsworthy with a short inscription. Apparently the original owner of this book could not quite read what Galsworthy had written in the inscription and must have written to him to ask him what it said. The note that Galsworthy wrote in answer is written and signed by Mr. Galsworthy on his stationary from "Bury House" in Sussex. The book contains the geneological fold-out chart that is so important to The Forsyte Saga. The book is printed on very thin Bible type paper and there are 1088 pages. A satin ribbon bookmark is bound-in. Although showing a bit of wear this book is nevertheless in Very Good plus condition and there is no foxing to the textblock. The pages are very clean. A signed Galsworthy limited, numbered book as well as a hand-written note by the author makes this a rare and important offering. We are pleased to send pictures on request. Price:

Galsworthy, John Bookman Portfolio Christmas 1928: Portrait of John Galsworthy with Scenes Illustrating the Forsyte Saga London Hodder & Stoughton 1928 First Edition Wraps Very Good No Jacket The Bookman Portfolio of 1928 contained four laid-in prints (suitable for framing). Three are in full color that illustrate scenes from John Galsworthy's 'The Forsyte Saga', and one marvelous photographic portrait in black and white of John Galsworthy. The photograph was executed by Raphael. This copy is in at least very good condition. The outer enclosing envelope is somewhat split at the crease and although it is still attached to itself, it is fragile. This is a tall quarto printing and the four prints start with a very fine black and white portrait of John Galsworthy done by Raphael. Then there are three beautiful full color paintings that depict scenes from the book. There is a quote from the book at the bottom of every print. The paintings were done by A.C. Michael and they are beautiful. On the inside of the outer folder there is a description paragraph for each of the prints regarding how they relate to the 'Forsyte Saga' as well as page numbers from the book where the quotes or paragraphs can be found. The top left corner of each print has the tiniest of turning. It will not be visible if the prints are framed because they are truly very small. All-in-all, if you are a Galsworthy collector I think that you would love this portfolio. We are pleased to send pictures on request. Price:

Galsworthy, John Silver Spoon, The London William Heineman 1926 First Edition Limited/Numbered Buchram Very Good Fair Signed by Author This is a Limited First edition of John Galsworthy's The Silver Spoon. Galsworthy is best known for his monumental novel "The Forsyte Saga". The edition was limited to 265 copies of which this is number 89. The book itself is in very good condition with some fading to the spine. The front hinge is starting very slightly but is firm and attached. The binding is tight and solid and the outer edge of the textblock is uncut. There is some offsetting to the half-title page that apparently came from a previous owner's bookmark that was left there for some time. However the book is strong and it is quite rare. The dustjacket has a couple of problems. It is well-toned from age and there is missing paper on both front and rear panels as well as the spine . The price of "Two Guineas net" is written on the spine rather than on the lower inner flap as with many British editions. The actual front and rear flaps are both blank. It appears to me that the endpapers may have been replaced at some time in the past because they are not as toned as the rest of the text. The text is lightly toned. For all that, the book has clearly never been read because there are still pages in it that are uncut from one another and this is probably why the textblock is in such good condition. All-in-all, this is a unique and interesting volume that sports the signature of a fine American author. The Forsyte Sage is the long chronicle novel for which John Galsworthy is chiefly remembered. The story of "The Forsyte Saga" is continued in "The White Monkey" (1924), "The Silver Spoon" (1926), and "Swan Song" (1928). Galsworthy, who died in 1933 was also a successful dramatist; His plays, written in a naturalistic style, usually examined a controversial ethical or social problem. In 1921 he founded PEN, a worldwide organization of writers. I also offer a First Edition of The Forsyte Sage in my inventory. We are pleased to send pictures on request. Price:
