1 Fortas, Abe Concerning Dissent and Civil Disobedience
New York Signet Books 1968 First Edition Wraps Very Good No Jacket
At the time that this book was written, Abe Fortas was an associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In 1968 when this book was published it was unprecedented. It came at a time when the nation was shocked by the findings of the 'Riot Commission Report', the death of Martin Luther King, and the flare-up of violence across the country. Fortas believes that America has a constructive alternative to violence. He explains what this option is as he carefully defines both the limit and the scope of permissable dissent and civil disobedience. He describes the crucial, creative role that these non-violent principles would play in the revolutionary America of 1968. A very unusual offering this is a paperback book as well as the First edition. Its condition is Very Good and it is tight and the textblock is absolutely clean. There is a little shelf-wear to the wraps and a small scratch on the rear cover in the extreme upper right corner. None of these is significant. This little book is a true piece of history. Being old enough to remember those times I found the 64 page book bringing back memories of the riots on TV and on our college campuses. Anyone who collects Historical tracts in the first edition will be pleased with this book as will anyone who remembers those times.
